Third deep dive into the SAP Business AI Platform: Knowledge Graph, BDC, and ontologies — why semantics trump raw data and how the context architect keeps it safe.

The decisive resource for productive AI deployment in the enterprise is business context – not the power of the LLMs (large language models) alone. A generic, external language model has no idea what a specific plant structure looks like, how partial deliveries are posted in your system, or what semantic relationship exists between an IoT machine alert and a maintenance contract. Only with this context do AI agents in ERP environments unfold their full potential.

With the announcement of the SAP Knowledge Graph and the repositioning of the SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC), SAP has laid the foundation to close exactly this gap. But this "digital memory" does not build and maintain itself. A highly specialised new key role is required: the Enterprise Semantic Engineer (Context Architect).

They no longer write classic interfaces. Instead, they model the semantics and knowledge of the entire enterprise so that AI models (such as SAP RPT-1) can draw accurate logical inferences (reasoning).

What Does an Enterprise Semantic Engineer Actually Need to Know? (Hard Skills)

This role demands a shift from purely tabular thinking (rows and columns) towards interconnected, graph-based structures:

1. Knowledge Graph Architecture & Graph Query Languages

They are the absolute expert on the SAP Knowledge Graph, mastering the querying and manipulation of graph structures and knowing how to scale semantic networks performantly.

2. Ontologies & Business Semantics

They are skilled at mapping real business objects and their relationships into abstract models (ontologies). They define precisely how entities such as "customer", "asset", "contract", or "supplier" correlate logically across all system boundaries — SAP and non-SAP alike.

3. SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) & HANA Cloud

They structure harmonised data layers in the cloud. They know how to combine structured ERP data with unstructured data (e.g. PDF contracts or telemetry data) through the HANA Cloud Vector Engine so that AI models can analyse both simultaneously in context.

4. Metadata Management & AI Readiness

They ensure complete data-provenance and metadata management. The AI must know exactly where a piece of information originates, how current it is, and whether it may be used in sensitive logical calculations (e.g. financial forecasts with models like SAP RPT-1).


The Extended Practical Example (Legally & Operationally Sound)

Scenario: An industrial company is transforming its business model by launching a new "Equipment-as-a-Service" product line. The machines remain company-owned; the customer pays based on actual usage. By default, however, the Business AI Platform does not understand how the incoming IoT telemetry data from the machines relates to the monthly SAP billing cycles.

The Enterprise Semantic Engineer's task:

  1. Semantic modelling in the SAP Knowledge Graph: Rather than writing a classic relational database interface, they extend the company's semantic network and define a new data object EquipmentAsAService.
  2. Contextual linking: They link the technical asset data of the machine (Asset Management) logically to the commercial billing model (SAP Subscription Order Management). They "explain" to the graph: "The node 'IoT sensor data stream' drives the value of the attribute 'usage unit', which in turn forms the basis for the entity 'monthly billing line item' in contract XYZ."
  3. Release for AI reasoning: Through this graph-based linking, the Business AI Platform will instantly and automatically know how the context is structured for any future query.

⚠️ Legal & Regulatory Safeguarding

When modelling these data relationships, the Semantic Engineer must observe strict regulatory guidelines that they hard-wire directly into the graph:

  • Data protection (GDPR compliance): They ensure that when machine data is linked, no personal data relating to machine operators enters the visible context of the AI agents.
  • Data governance & licensing: They tag sensitive financial data with metadata tags so that external third-party LLMs connected via BTP are technically blocked from that data cluster. Only the protected, internal SAP model may read those semantic nodes.

Conclusion for Companies

Data is the new gold – semantics is the key that unlocks this treasure for AI systems. The Enterprise Semantic Engineer is the architect who makes a company's data treasure readable and usable for artificial intelligence in the first place. They build the neural network of enterprise knowledge. For IT departments this means: any organisation that wants to win in the era of the Autonomous Enterprise must start investing in graph-based data structures and semantic competencies now.
