With so much focus on AI-native profiles, the question arises: what does this mean for the classic SAP roles? The answer is unambiguously positive: administrators and developers gain considerably in importance, influence, and creative scope – while fundamentally transforming the way they work.
An autonomous AI agent can indeed select its own tools during reasoning, but the tools and the infrastructure itself must still be built, provisioned, secured, and maintained by people. Without a clean system landscape, an impeccable ERP core, and performant APIs, even the most advanced business AI is helpless.
The Administrators: Guardians of the Digital Runway
1. The BTP & Platform Administrator (evolves into AI Infrastructure Admin)
- Previous focus: Setting up subaccounts, allocating cloud credits (entitlements), UAA/IAS configuration, and monitoring BTP runtimes.
- The transformation: Alongside their classic tasks, they now manage computing capacity for AI models within SAP AI Core. They govern connectivity to external LLM providers (multi-LLM connectivity), monitor token consumption and AI-infrastructure performance, and ensure the platform scales when hundreds of agents orchestrate processes simultaneously.
2. The Integration Suite Administrator (evolves into Gateway Guardian for Agents)
- Previous focus: Monitoring message queues (message processing), certificate management, and provisioning Cloud Integration tenants.
- The transformation: Because AI agents operate across system boundaries, they now monitor data streams in SAP API Management. They ensure stable communication between the AI platform and non-SAP systems (Salesforce, Azure, etc.), scale the messaging infrastructure during peak loads, and secure API endpoints against unauthorised access.
The Developers: Producers of the AI Toolbox
1. The BTP Developer (CAP / Node.js / Java) – From UI Builder to Capability Provider
- Previous focus: Building Fiori user interfaces, OData services, and extensions on the BTP.
- The transformation: As users increasingly interact with the system through Joule (natural language), classic screen development moves to the background. Their primary task shifts to building core capabilities for the AI. They write highly specialised microservices (e.g. using the SAP Cloud Application Programming Model — CAP) that are made available to the AI agent as a "tool."
- Example: They code the complex, company-specific algorithm for calculating CO₂ emissions. The AI agent knows when to call this tool — but the BTP developer built it.
2. The ABAP Developer (evolves into Clean Core Guardian)
- Previous focus: Writing reports, table extensions, and user exits directly in the ERP core.
- The transformation: SAP consistently pursues the Clean Core principle. The ABAP developer no longer modifies the core; instead, they build modern RAP business objects (ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model) and expose CDS views (Core Data Services). These semantically clean objects are the direct feed for the SAP Knowledge Graph and the APIs used by AI agents — making S/4HANA "AI-ready."
3. The Integration Developer (evolves into Ecosystem Connect Architect)
- Previous focus: Building classic point-to-point interfaces (iDocs, RFC-to-REST) in Cloud Integration.
- The transformation: They build the digital highways on which agents travel. They move from rigid interface chains towards event-driven architectures (e.g. via SAP Advanced Event Mesh), ensuring that business-critical events reach the AI Foundation in real time and in the right format, so agents can react autonomously and immediately.
The Evolution of Tools: Development and Administration on Steroids
The transformation of classic roles is accelerated by a fundamental shift in day-to-day work. Developers and administrators no longer write and configure everything by hand — they themselves leverage the agentic approach as a highly efficient turbo boost.
1. AI-Assisted Object Generation (ABAP & CAP)
Classic development objects (such as RAP business objects, CDS views, or CAP data models) will increasingly be generated in an automated fashion. The developer describes the required business logic and table structures in natural language. AI tools deeply integrated into the IDEs generate the code scaffolding, create service definitions, and automatically write the corresponding unit tests. The developer transforms from a pure code typist into a strategic code reviewer, validating quality, performance, and adherence to Clean Core guidelines.
2. No-Click Administration via Cloud SDK and CLI
Manual click-work in the SAP BTP Cockpit is a thing of the past. Management, provisioning, and scaling of BTP infrastructure is increasingly handled declaratively through the SAP BTP Command Line Interface (CLI) and Cloud SDKs — orchestrated by AI. An administrator directs AI-assistance systems through voice commands (e.g. "Create a new productive subaccount in AWS Frankfurt, activate SAP AI Core and the Integration Suite, and link our Identity Provider"). The AI translates this into flawless scripts and rolls out complex landscapes as Infrastructure as Code within minutes — fully compliant and audit-proof.
The Interplay as an Analogy: Building an Autonomous Vehicle
To understand how the established and new roles work together, the image of an autonomous car is helpful:
- The ABAP & BTP developers build the engine, gearbox, and mechanics (RAP objects, CAP services, core logic).
- The Integration Developer builds the roads, signs, and traffic lights (APIs, event structures).
- The Administrators ensure the roads are clear, fuel flows, and systems run stably (infrastructure, AI Core, API security).
- The Semantic Engineer writes the digital map (SAP Knowledge Graph).
- The Intent Architect programmes the autopilot and the destination (intents in Joule Studio).
- The Governance Officer sets the traffic rules and speed limits (guardrails).
- The Agent Supervisor sits in the control centre as air traffic controller, stepping in only when an unforeseen obstacle appears.
